The Moase Funeral Home in Summerside has an historical
connection to funeral providers of earlier days including S.H. Wadman,
Percy L. Bowness and H.A. Compton, especially the latter two funeral
directors.
The Compton Funeral Home on Central Street in Summerside was founded
by H.A. Compton in 1877. He was to become one of the first mayors of
Summerside. He
was succeeded by his son, Keith D., who died suddenly in 1961. It is
believed the Comptons purchased the first motorized funeral coach (a La
Salle) in the 1920s.
Carl C. Moase who had been associated with the Compton firm since
1957, purchased the business on the death of the founder's son.
Another early funeral firm in Summerside was started by Percy L.
Bowness, a native of the area who spent time as a young man in the
photography business in Worchester, Massachusetts. Photography was his
first love and he continued to operate a studio for some years after he
opened his funeral home.
Percy retired in 1947 (passing away in 1951) and was succeeded by his
son Ensor who had seen military service in
the Second World War and
later graduated from the New England School of Mortuary Science. He
purchased the H.M. Downing residence on Central Street in 1950 and used
the building for funeral operations and as living quarters. The Bowness
family also had a small location in Bedeque.
Following Ensor's death in 1962, his wife continued in the business
with the help of son Bob who purchased the firm and continued
operations until selling to Carl Moase in 1968. Moase used the Compton
address for funeral services and the Bowness location as a casket
display area and residence.
Moase operated under the Compton name under March 1, 1973 when it was
changed to the Moase Funeral Home. He brought son Edgar into the firm as
vice-president and son Ira in the same year. Other company directors
included wife Roberta, and the sons' wives Judy and Faye. Longtime staff
members included George Olscamp of Summerside and Abel L. Gallant of
Mont-Carmel.
Carl Moase eventually closed the Bowness location and retired in1980.
Edgar and Faye Moase operated the Funeral Home until December of 2003,
when they retired. Employee, Mark MacLean and his wife Mary
purchased the Funeral Home from them.
Mark and Mary were married in
1992 and have 2 sons, Jordan and Morgan. Mark is a member of the
PEI Funeral Directors and Embalmers Association, the Rotary Club of
Summerside, the Summerside Chamber of Commerce, and the Trinity United
Church.
Moase Funeral Home is well-situated on a tree-lined residential
street. The chapel and visitation areas offer a spacious,
but homey environment. |
