Claire Mary Matthews
Matthews - It is with profound sadness that the family of Claire M. Matthews announces her passing on October 6th 2018 in Summerside in her 95th year of life. Claire died peacefully in the presence of her two daughters Coleen Matthews Skinner (Upper Kingsclear, NB), Christene Matthews (Chris Celeste) of Sussex, and the caring staff of Wedgewood Manor. Claire is the daughter of the late Edward and Mamie (MacNeil) Laughlin of Sherbrooke, PEI and the loving wife of Harold L. Matthews who predeceased Claire in 1986.
A fixture of the town of Summerside, Claire had a special gift for making others feel loved and comforted by her thoughtful words, acts of service, sense of humour, and her great generosity. Even into her 80s and early 90s, Claire volunteered taking care of seniors at various nursing homes in her community and often worked at the Prince County Hospital gift store. Many in the City of Summerside will remember Claire from her time working in Ladies Retail for 43 years, primarily as the as Head Sales Clerk in the Ladies Department for Holman’s of PEI for 37 years. Claire also helped with her husband’s business H.L. Matthews Tire Service for over 30 years. Being the eldest daughter in a family of eight, she helped her mother in the raising of brothers and sisters. Later in life she was also a devoted caregiver to her many Aunt and Uncles. Her home was always open to family & friends alike, whether it was a short or long- term stay.
Claire loved life. Well into her 80s, Claire had the energy of a woman in her 60s. She was always on the go attending Friday night outings to the Air Force Wing, playing cards on any given day of week across Prince County, going to music shows, and enjoying bus tours.
Proud Grandma to Lyle Skinner (Sonia Noreau) of Ottawa, Cali (Grandma’s Girl) & Matt Celeste of Sussex, Beloved Aunt & Godmother to many & a friend to all.
